Sewer Pump Stations - The Value They Bring to Your Community

Flip Law - Wednesday, April 25, 2012

Sewer pump stations in your community help keep the water flowing clean and healthy.

sewer pump stationsSewer pump stations play a necessary role in the cleaning of our country’s water supply. Without these stations we would not have enough fresh water to meet our needs. Our clean water supply is rapidly depleting and the need for treatment plants and pump stations is vital to our survival.

When the wastewater is flushed from your home it is moved through a series of underground pipes and carried into the treatment plant where it will go through a process to remove the sewage and clean and purify the water.

During the solids separation and purification process the water is transferred throughout the treatment plant as it is being processed. Once the treatment process is finished, it is released back into the lakes and bodies of water that supply your community with water. Purifying wastewater for use in the community is vital for providing us with clean water and without the pump stations it would not be possible. Without this process we would quickly run out of fresh, clean water to use.

Sewage Pump Stations FAQ's

Terry Brady - Sunday, April 22, 2012

Sewage pump stations are a key component in providing the clean and healthy water we depend on for life.

sewage pump stationSewage pump stations play a vital role our country’s water supply. Without the pump stations, wastewater could not be moved to the treatment facilities to be cleaned and purified for reuse.

Most people take clean, fresh water for granted. We never give a thought to all that goes into making it happen. Here are some interesting and common questions you might have about sewage pump stations:

What is a sewage pump station? A sewage pump station pumps wastewater through a series of underground pipes into the sewage treatment plants where the waste is removed and the water is cleaned and purified. Once the purification process is complete, pump stations are used to discharge the water back into the community for reuse.

What is remote monitoring? Remote monitoring is the system that is used to monitor the conditions at the treatment facility. The system sends reports back to the operator through the internet with water pressure, basin levels, and temperature readings as well as other important statistics to warn of any potential problems.

Where does the processed water go? Once the wastewater is cleaned and purified it is pumped back into our lakes, rivers and other bodies of water to be released back into the community.

Duct Piping for Chemical Applications

Justin Watts - Monday, March 12, 2012
Duct Piping for Chemical Applications

In industrial processes there are many fumes, gases, and fluids that need to be exhausted or drained from the application process.

Chemical resistant PVC or CPVC duct is a good choice for most applications and temperatures. For more aggressive chemicals fiberglass FRP, PP, or PVDF duct piping may be considered.

Duct piping systems in PVC and CPVC material are light weight making handling and installation easier. Custom rectangular and square Duct can be fabricated in sizes 6” up to 30”.  Round PVC and CPVC duct material are available in sizes up to 60”. Scrubbers and hoods are also available in various materials.

Thermoplastic duct exhaust systems have a longer service life when compared to metal in the same corrosive environment.

Water Park Pumps

Justin Watts - Wednesday, February 29, 2012
Water Park Pumps

Recently I went to a water park here in SC to examine the pumps that run the lazy river water feature as well as the pumps that operate the water slides and various other water features throughout the water park.  The primary focus was on the lazy river water pumps.  These particular pumps circulate water throughout the park creating that river effect for people to enjoy floating around the water park.  Lazy river pumps are generally just centrifugal pumps that recirculate water in the man made channel and boost water pressure to make that churning effect of being on a river.

These pumps operate with virtually no elevation difference and the only back pressure on the pump is generated by the discharge openings in the channel.  When installing these pumps always remember to install a throttling valve on the discharge side of these pumps.  Never install a throttling valve on the suction side of a pump as this just creates cavitation problems and will eventually destroy the impeller and the bearings in the pump.  This is a common mistake a lot of people make so don’t let this happen to you.

Installing a throttling valve on the discharge side of your lazy river water pump will allow you to control the flow to keep the pump from overworking itself.  This throttling effect actually causes the pump motor to run at a lower amperage thus increasing motor life and saving energy.  It also keeps the pump from having suction cavitation issues from moving too much water.  A third and final advantage to installing a throttling valve on your lazy river water pump is it increases the velocity of the water exiting your piping which increases the flow through the channel thus making the lazy river more effective.

Thermoplastic Solution for Compressed Air Piping Corrosion Problems

Justin Watts - Sunday, May 22, 2011

In the air line environment, there can be condensate and moisture that would cause most metal systems to scale, pit or corrode. The result could be pressure drop and damage to sensitive equipment.

The choice of thermoplastics would give you a smooth bore and corrosion resistance in a moist or corrosive environment. Asahi-America’s Air-Pro compressed air piping system is constructed specifically for compressed air. The specially-engineered HDPE resin is an extremely ductile material that will expand at the point of failure and tear open without explosive fragments. The system is rated for an operating pressure of 230 psi. This plastic is also chemically resistant to synthetic and mineral oils used by compressors; the other available thermoplastic (ABS) marketed for pressurized air has experienced failures because of this and at least one of theproducts (the bright green one) has been taken off the market  There is, however, an adapter available in the Asahi Air-Pro line that would easily transition the obsolete system to an Air-Pro system.

Please note that PVC Schedule 40 or 80 should NEVER be used for air lines. PVC is a brittle thermoplastic and under air  pressure, any failure can cause, and has caused shards of plastic to be propelled through the air and cause damage, severe injury or death.

Choosing the Proper Pipe Support System in a Corrosive Environment

Justin Watts - Friday, February 25, 2011

So, you’ve sized your pipe, and chosen the material to meet your chemical and temperature needs.  Have you considered if an acidic atmosphere in the area might corrode the piping support system?

Installation of Aickinstrut  non-metallic channel and hangers should be considered for environments where Unistrut metallic strut systems may not be compatible. Some of the applications for consideration include chemical plants, wastewater treatment plants, aquariums, theme parks, desalination plants, underground vaults and other corrosive environments.

Aickinstrut non-metallic channel is offered in extruded PVC for an excellent chemical resistance product.  Also available is pultruded polyester and vinylester that contains multiple strands of glass filament to create a product of strength with chemical and temperature resistance.

Materials should be chosen to meet or exceed temperature and chemical resistance.  As a general guideline, extruded PVC channel has a temperature rating -25F to 130F.  Pultruded polyester and vinylester channel have a temperature rating -35F to 200F. As chemicals vary, chemical resistance charts  need to be consulted for the proper material for your specific application.

You may contact your local W.P. Law representative for more information on choosing the proper pipe support system.

Valve Selection

Cameron Huntley - Monday, January 31, 2011
Industrial Valve Selection

Valve selection for your fluid handling system depends on several application factors.  First, you need to specify how you need to control the system.  You must determine whether  you need an on/off, modulating, pressure relief/regulator, or backflow prevention valve.  You may also choose to manually operate the valve or leave the control to automation.  Electric and pneumatic actuation may be required for remote operation.

The chemical resistance of thermoplastic valves should be carefully selected for the best performance in your particular application.  For example: 98% sulfuric acid would not be recommended for use in a PVC valve.  The better option would be PVDF in this high concentration.  Lower concentrations of sulfuric acid would be suitable for PVC.

There are a variety of elastomers to choose from with varying  chemical resistance and temperature ratings.  PTFE, EPDM, FKM, TFE, Viton, and nitrile are a few of the choices that are offered.  For example: a sodium hydroxide application would require EPDM elastomer, whereas Viton would not be compatible.

With the vast selection of thermoplastics available, finding the one that matches your chemical resistance and temperature range needs is very important.  PVC is normally used in temperature ranges up to 140 degrees F.  Polypropylene and PVDF can be used with temperatures ranging from 195 to 250 degrees F.  Each manufacturer has information specific to their products' compatibility for your specific application.  Please feel free to contact one of our W. P. Law Inc. Industrial representatives with your valve selection questions.
